When to Replace Brake Pads

When to Replace Brake Pads

Brake pads are a critical safety component that wear down over time. Knowing when to replace them can prevent dangerous situations and protect your expensive brake rotors or rims.

Signs Your Brake Pads Need Replacement

1. Visual Inspection

Rim Brakes: Brake pads should have visible grooves or tread patterns. If these are worn smooth, it's time for replacement.

Disc Brakes: Look at the pad thickness through the caliper. Most pads should be replaced when they're down to 1-1.5mm thick.

2. Reduced Braking Power

If you need to pull the brake lever harder or further to achieve the same stopping power, your pads are likely worn.

3. Squealing or Grinding Noises

High-pitched squealing can indicate contaminated or glazed pads. Grinding noises mean you're down to the metal backing plate.

How Long Do Brake Pads Last?

Typical lifespan ranges from 500 to 2,000 miles, but regular inspection is more reliable than mileage estimates.

Brake Pad Maintenance Tips

  • Inspect pads regularly – at least monthly for frequent riders
  • Keep braking surfaces clean
  • Avoid contaminating pads with oil or lubricant
