Spring Bike Tune-Up Checklist

Spring is the perfect time to give your bike a thorough tune-up after months of winter storage or reduced riding. A proper spring tune-up ensures your bike is safe, efficient, and ready for the riding season ahead.

Essential Spring Tune-Up Tasks

1. Clean Your Bike Thoroughly

Start with a complete wash to remove dirt, grime, and salt residue. Use bike-specific cleaning products and avoid high-pressure water that can damage bearings. Pay special attention to the drivetrain, which accumulates the most dirt.

2. Inspect the Frame and Components

Look for cracks, dents, or damage to the frame. Check all bolts and fasteners for proper tightness. Inspect cables and housing for fraying or corrosion. Replace any worn or damaged parts before they cause problems on the road.

3. Check and Adjust Brakes

Inspect brake pads for wear – they should have at least 1-2mm of pad material remaining. Check brake cables for fraying and ensure proper tension. Test brake lever feel and adjust as needed. For hydraulic brakes, check fluid levels and bleed if necessary.

4. Tune Your Drivetrain

Clean and lubricate the chain with quality bike-specific lubricant. Check chain wear with a chain checker tool – replace if stretched beyond 0.75%. Inspect cassette and chainrings for wear. Adjust derailleurs for smooth, precise shifting.

5. Inspect Tires and Wheels

Check tires for cuts, cracks, or excessive wear. Inflate to recommended pressure. Spin wheels to check for wobbles or hops – true if necessary. Inspect spokes for tension and damage. Check hub bearings for smooth rotation.

6. Lubricate Moving Parts

Apply appropriate lubricant to pivot points, cables, and other moving parts. Don't over-lubricate – excess attracts dirt. Use dry lube in dusty conditions, wet lube for rainy weather.

When to Bring Your Bike to the Shop

While many maintenance tasks can be done at home, some require professional expertise:

  • Wheel truing and spoke replacement
  • Hydraulic brake bleeding
  • Bottom bracket or headset service
  • Derailleur hanger alignment
  • Suspension service
